FC Westchester alum Richard Martinez, who played for the FCW ’88s, played all 90 minutes for the Puerto Rico Islanders in their CONCACAF Champions League 4-1 win over the MLS’ LA Galaxy.
Martinez marked the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan for most of the match as the Islanders, a USSF Division 2 team, surprised the Galaxy in winning the preliminary round match of the Champions’ League in a match held at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. The second leg will be played Aug. 4 in San Juan, with the overall winner to progress to the group stage.
Martinez’s dad, interestingly, wrote to FC Westchester after the match, saying: "After the game, Rich spent a few moments with Edson Buddle (who played with the FC Westchester 80s). The two spoke fondly about about FC Westchester and wanted to let the club know that."
After "graduating" from FC Westchester went on to be an All-Conference performer at Hofstra University. He is also a member of the Puerto Rican National Team.
