On June 1, 2010, the Board of Directors of FC Westchester approved the creation of the annual Lucas Goldbaum Memorial Scholarship, initially in the amount of $500 (five hundred dollars).
As a member of the FC Westchester 1996 team that won the 2009 Eastern New York State Championship, Lucas Goldbaum was not only a great goalie, but also a tremendous teammate. Off the field, Lucas was smart, sweet, and popular, and an extraordinary young boy full of courage beyond his years. The FC Westchester family was well aware of his battle against an inoperable brain stem tumor. Ever the courageous young boy, Lucas fought valiantly against his condition for almost two years until passing this past May 12, 2010.
FC Westchester will honor Lucas, our teammate and Club member, by establishing a scholarship fund in his memory. The Lucas Goldbaum Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide a scholarship, initially in the amount of $500 to an FC Westchester player to be named on an annual basis. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support to a player with an athletic, academic and character profile similar to Lucas, and in need of financial support. The Scholarship Committee, consisting of Kathleen O’Connell, Juergen Moessner (FC Board Member), and Coach James Quiroga will review all applications. (See below for application process.)
The recipient of each year’s award will be announced at the annual Club meeting in November by Kathleen O’Connell, the mother of Lucas, and member of the Scholarship Committee. The Fund depends on continued donations, and we welcome your support. If you would like to make a donation to the fund in honor of Lucas, please send a check payable to FC Westchester with the words “Lucas Goldbaum Memorial Fund” in the reference to:
